Information Your Grant Writer Needs from YOU to Write a Winning Proposal

Even the best grant writer can only do so much for a client without the right information.  All too often, organizations are so immersed in their work that they take for granted what outsiders do and do not know about their work.  This is where a checklist of information needed from clients come in handy.

Generally speaking, the grant writer needs to know what need will be fulfilled through the program for which funding is sought.  While every grant has different informational requirements, these points are a good place to start:

  • What is the service area/target population?
  • Relevant statistical data – crime rate, poverty rate, unemployment rate, etc.
  • What – if any – resources already exist to address the need this program is designed for? How will these resources be leveraged for the purpose of this project?
  • Program Design – this includes activities, practices, etc.
  • Program Timeline
  • Budget information!
  • Project Partners
  • Project Leadership, Roles and Key Personnel
  • How will program impact or success be measured?

Make a list of information needed and set a strict deadline for when they need to get this information to you so that you can complete the grant application on time.  Of course, don’t expect them to meet this deadline, and expect to have to poke and prod a couple of times to get all the information they need.
